Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a progressive atherosclerotic disorder that affects over 200 million people worldwide. PAD prevalence increased by almost 25% between 2000 and 2010. PAD disproportionately affects older-aged adults and people from racial and ethnic minority groups. Significant individual, and health care system, level consequences result if PAD is not managed appropriately. Much of the burden is preventable because of modifiable risk factors such as diabetes and smoking. Poor risk factor management causes limb and life-threatening sequelae. Late-stage PAD is associated with poor quality of life, increased cardiovascular mortality, and high costs of care.
A recent scientific statement released by the American Heart Association identified a series of gaps in PAD-related research. The purpose of our Research Topic is to address a critical area identified by the council teams. Specifically, we ask for manuscripts related to improving the quality of PAD management and prognosis, with a particular focus on traditional and non-traditional cardiovascular risk factors. Wherever possible, manuscripts should include data from groups where documented disparities persist (e.g. race/ethnicity, sex, geographic) and apply advanced analytic techniques.
Led by an expert team of specialists, the Research Topic will accept manuscripts within this area of research, with the aim of giving the reader an overview of cardiovascular risk factors and management, as well as currently identified disparities. For that reason, all article types accepted by Frontiers are encouraged.
Sub-themes for this Research Topic may include, but are not limited to:
1) Diabetes and Smoking Management in Primary Care Setting.
2) Biomarkers and identification of novel risk factors.
3) Trends analyses in medication usage.
