Mental disorders can cause significant suffering for individuals, their families, as well as causing a strain on public health services. As some mental illnesses arise early on in life and can lead to the development of physical illnesses, awareness of mental health disorders and the services and treatment available is crucial for public health.
Public Mental Health aims to provide awareness of mental health disorders across populations in order to prevent mental disorders and promote mental health across all regions. Public Mental Health also takes responsibility for the provision of mental health services. These in turn support the collaboration of psycho-social organisations and agencies which aim to promote mental health, prevent mental disorders and reduce their burden (including cost containment). Overall, public mental health research equips mental health professionals with the skills to help those suffering with mental disorders, as well as targeting the mental disorder at the early stage to prevent suffering later in the life-course.
The Chief Editor of our Public Mental Health section, Prof. Wulf Rossler, is developing this Research Topic in order to address the range of mental health disorders and their burden on public health, as well as promoting mental health research. For this special issue, we welcome expert opinions or perspective articles on the following:
• Promotion of mental health and prevention of mental disorders
• Provision of care for mental health services
• Social epidemiology of mental disorders
• Assessment of vulnerable/at risk groups of health systems
• Interplay between physical and mental illnesses
• Social inclusion/exclusion in relation to mental health (e.g. stigma/discrimination)
• Violence and substance abuse with relation to mental disorders and the economic burden related to this
• Inequalities in the access to mental health services
• Health policy relating to mental health
• The future of psychiatry
