2021 has been an unprecedented year in public health. We entered the second calendar year of dealing with a pandemic that has devastated global health infrastructures, widened health inequalities, and exposed health system vulnerabilities. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has also significantly set back Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3 – Good Health and Well Being) progress, in particular reduction of maternal mortality, ending all preventable deaths under five years of age, fighting infectious diseases, health coverage, and many more SDG 3 indicators. Also previous progress in reducing inequalities has been reversed.
In this Research Topic organized by Chief Editors of Frontiers in Public Health, we wish to highlight emerging issues in public health represented by our specialty sections. Topics (but not limited to) that we endeavor to spotlight include:
1. Pandemics and health emergencies preparedness;
2. Primary health care programs and universal health coverage;
3. Tackling inequalities in health access and outcomes;
4. Mitigating health impacts of climate change;
5. Coping with an aging population;
6. The new approaches to chemical hazards: the life-course exposome;
7. Health and biodiversity;
8. Supporting the health of workforce;
9. Science and policy-making;
10. Mental health and migration;
11. Public health impacts of radiation.
