Biologically active natural products are an important source of innovative drugs. Statistical data showed that more than half of small molecule drugs are derived from natural products and their analogs. Meanwhile, highly efficient synthetic methodology development and functional activity evaluation of related active molecules, as essential steps for obtaining corresponding innovative drugs, are always research frontiers for organic chemists and medicinal chemists.
In recent years, the research community has witnessed significant advances in the design and synthesis of bioactive molecules, the discovery of novel natural products, total synthesis of natural products, development of synthetic methodology based on synthesis of bioactive scaffolds. Accordingly, we hope to be able to summarize and display the latest developments in the synthesis strategies of active natural products and analogs, as well as their biological activities in this Research Topic, and provide new methods and template molecules for the subsequent development of innovative drug molecules.
