Achieving greener urbanization is a critical topic accompanying human society. However, land, as basic space for human living and production, is facing the dilemma of "resources shortage " and "extensive utilization". Currently, land use patterns and their resource and environmental effects have broken the red line of arable land protection, as well as exacerbated the "competitive conflicts" between economic development and ecological security. Confronted with the global spread of COVID-19, food crisis, as well as serious resource shortages, such as cropland shortage, land degradation, and farmland pollution, and other environmental problems, promoting land-use sustainability to achieve greener urbanization is the key issue that needs to be addressed.
In the field of environmental science, most of the existing studies investigated land-use change and their positive or negative environmental effects during the urbanization process. However, not many studies focused on resource and land use management schemes that aim to mitigate negative environmental effects and promote sustainable development through green urbanization. Therefore, this Research Topic intends to open an academic discussion on the promotion of sustainable land use development by exploring new studies in the field. We will focus on the diverse theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches, which engage with and contribute to the environmental science literature, as broadly defined by the disciplines of high-quality urbanization, land use sustainability, planning, and friendly resource environmental effects subjects.
This Research Topic focuses on cutting-edge research that advances understanding and analysis of sustainable land use patterns; the definition and representation of greener urbanization; the formulation, implementation, and contestation of land use, and resource and environmental policy; and human interactions with the urban-rural environment. We also welcome articles from interdisciplinary fields, which are essential for sustainable land use and greener urbanization, such as how land use enhances urban-rural resilience and how land use is integrated with environmental sustainability. The manuscripts can be case studies, empirical studies, modeling, and review studies from anywhere in the world. The core arguments should focus on the following topics:
1. Land use sustainability
2. Resource and environmental effects of land-use change
3. Economic growth and greener urbanization
4. Urban-rural integration development
5. Urban-rural living environment
6. Urban-rural resilience and spatial planning
7. Landscape pattern and ecological system service
8. Land use towards sustainable agriculture
9. Land use change towards carbon neutrality
