Neuroscience, like science in general, advances through paradigm shifts that fundamentally change theories, approaches and methods. To name a few, Hebbian learning, neuroplasticity, functional magnetic resonance imaging, brain-machine interfaces and optogenetics have contributed to revolutionary changes in our understanding how the brain works.
Notwithstanding many previous paradigm shifts, many neural functions are not well understood, and some are not understood at all. This means that the major discoveries are still to be made in the field of brain science.
In this Research Topic, we welcome articles focused on the developments in Neuroscience that can be considered paradigm shifts. (Please do not submit articles on incremental developments that are not really paradigm shifts.) These can be articles on the history of Neuroscience, reviews and original research on the modern hot topics, and perspective articles on the important areas that will likely emerge in the future. We also welcome articles that analyze developments that promised to become paradigm shifts, but vanished.
We hope that this Research Topic will help Neuroscience community to learn from their previous successes and failures.
