It has been reported that the negative impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic have disproportionately affected those that are vulnerable, including those that are chronically ill and disabled; those that are low income and/or homeless; minority groups; specific geographic communities; young children; older adults; those that lack appropriate health insurance coverage; those with severe mental and behavioral disorders; and refugees. The effects can be directly related to higher morbidity when infected with COVID-19, negative financial impacts, and the indirect impact on mental health and other unrelated health issues.
As part of our journal’s mission to address critical aspects of this issue and promote essential discussions, Frontiers in Public Health is organizing a Research Topic focused on “The Impact of COVID-19 on Vulnerable Populations”. Led by an expert team of specialists, the Research Topic will accept manuscripts within this area of research to give the reader an overview of the latest discoveries and new findings, analysis of previously published data, new opinions and perspectives, and methods and protocols (when relevant). For that reason, all article types accepted by Frontiers are encouraged.
Sub-themes for this Research Topic may include, but are not limited to:
• The possibility of participating in COVID-19 preventive activities;
• The likelihood of seeking medical care when necessary during the COVID-19 pandemic;
• Changes in the nutrition intake during the COVID-19 pandemic;
• Inequalities in the social determinants of health and the effect COVID-19 has had on these communities;
• The impact of restrictions put in place during the COVID-19 pandemic on those that are vulnerable;
• Specific health inequalities;
• Improvements in Public Health that aim to reduce health inequalities in the future.
