Natural products are the most reliable and robust source of biomolecules for pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and nutraceuticals mainly. It is mainly due to the chemical diversity in natural products. However, the diversity can also be an obstacle to utilizing natural products for the source of useful biomolecules; the complexity of chemical ingredients is the most difficult hurdle to surpass for the discovery of biomolecules. On top of that, uncovering the activity of new biomolecules is challenging due to the variability of real biosystems. Therefore, the key issue in the field of life sciences related to biomolecules is how to handle the complex chemical profiles for their discovery and mechanism in organisms. For this, metabolomics is currently considered a robust tool to investigate.
Since the end of the 20th century, metabolomics has become a key technique to study the metabolome. It is not just a chemical profiling tool but also a part of systems biology, which aims at unveiling biological processing by integrating all the omics data. The goal of metabolomics is to deduce a biological or physiological phenomenon using chemical profiling of the metabolome. With this object of metabolomics, many scientists have applied metabolomics tools to screening bioactive molecules from natural resources and to investigate the mechanisms of active molecules in biological systems as well as chasing their bio-transformed products. In recent decades, many related technologies have been developed for metabolomics, e.g., increasing sensitivity, data robustness, and resolution of analytical platforms, sample preparation techniques, development of the methods of data processing and mining. These efforts in the field of metabolomics have resulted in many successful examples in nature-based drug development and the investigation of their mechanisms. Therefore, the aim of the Research Topic is to cover all the applications and methods developments within the field of metabolomics to the discovery of biomolecules from natural sources, as well as unveiling the mechanisms of their bioactivity.
Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, the following themes:
• Applications of metabolomics within bioactivity tests
• Methodological development of metabolomics techniques
• Development of metabolomics-based bioscreening methods
• Investigation of drug metabolism using metabolomic tools
