Plant viruses have been recognized as economically important plant pathogens worldwide, since they cause serious losses to various crops on which we depend. In recent years, both the amount of information concerning plant viral genomes and proteins, as well as the understanding of their interactions with their hosts, have increased significantly. With pathogenic plant viruses constantly emerging, there is currently no effective or durable control measure available.
Rapid development of next generation sequencing technologies have greatly increased the amount of available sequence data, and provided novel opportunities for investigations of the molecular mechanisms underlying viral pathogenesis. Multidisciplinary epidemiological research is essential in the control of plant viral diseases.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has designated 2020 as the International Year of Plant Health. Epidemiological studies on the distribution and determinants of plant virus diseases and the application of these studies to the control of diseases will be in the focus of this Research Topic.
In particular, we welcome contributions on the following topics:
- host range determinants,
- viral factors involved in pathogenesis,
- virus-vector interactions during transmission,
- virus-host interactions during viral replication, translation, movement, and host resistance,
- current understanding of the best management strategies to control plant virus disease.
