The growing importance of sustainability has given rise to the concept of sustainable entrepreneurship. It is a relatively new concept that combines economic, social, and environmental value creation with a focus on the well-being of future generations. By concentrating on sustainable economic activities and new sources of income, it aims to address current social, economic, and environmental issues with a focus on emerging and developing countries. Entrepreneurial approaches used to solve those issues are implemented through new business models, e.g. through Green & Inclusive Business, Social & Environmental Entrepreneurship, Social Business, Low Carbon Business Models. The aim of those innovative business models is to develop new markets, generate new sources of income - especially for disadvantaged groups - and contribute to a sustainable approach to the economy.
Sustainable entrepreneurship works at the interface of politics, business, and civil society to mobilize new resources and push for structural change towards socially and environmentally sustainable economic activity. Producers and service providers often implement their projects in partnership with the national and global private sector, as well as in collaboration with governments, research institutions, and civil society groups.
This Research Topic aims to explore the opportunities and challenges of creating, developing, and scaling up social and environmental ventures in sustainable entrepreneurship. In order to do that, we are looking to explore the following research questions:
• What is the role of entrepreneurs in discovering, developing, and exploiting sustainable business opportunities?
• What motivates entrepreneurs to create new sustainable businesses?
• How do sustainable businesses make a positive contribution to social and environmental ecosystems?
• What role does the institutional environment play for sustainable entrepreneurship?
• How can sustainable entrepreneurship meet the challenges of sustainable development?
Sustainable entrepreneurship shares many characteristics with environmental and social entrepreneurship, but the consistent pursuit of economic viability, social justice, and environmental sustainability distinguishes sustainable entrepreneurship from other concepts. Exploring this multidimensionality requires different theories, research perspectives (e.g. critical and mainstream), and methods (conceptual and empirical). We invite researchers, academics, practitioners, entrepreneurs, and other stakeholders to submit original research or systematic review for this Research Topic.
This Topic has been realized in collaboration with Dr. Victor Climent.
