Over the last 20 years increasing numbers of women have graduated from medical schools around the world. In parallel there has been an increase in the number of women pursuing a career in surgery as well as becoming qualified surgeons. However, barriers continue to exist to the career progression of women in surgery at all levels as well as for other individuals of non-binary genders. There are now the added concerns of the mitigating effects of the COVID19 pandemic on the progress of gender equity initiatives.
Being either female or of a non-binary gender can impact on the ability of individuals in the wider community to access adequate and timely surgical management. There are similar connotations for surgical research. An inadequate focus on gender per se can potentially skew the reported outcomes of either surgical procedures or the results of research studies. This carries significant implications for health systems.

By having an understanding of where there are barriers to adequate care and/or the reporting of outcomes according to gender, this facilitates the development of measures which can then be adopted and implemented by organizations as well as healthcare systems.
