It is estimated that there are 38 million people worldwide living with HIV or AIDS, and despite the advancements in our understanding of the condition, many people continued to be diagnosed. Today we observe World AIDS Day, the first global health day founded in 1988. World AIDS Day provides us with the opportunity to unite in the fight against HIV, bring attention to the HIV epidemic, and increase the knowledge and awareness of HIV worldwide.
It is in this spirit that Frontiers is launching a new series of article collections to coincide with this UN day. This occasion not only offers an opportunity to support those living with HIV or AIDS, and commemorate those who have lost their lives to AIDS but also to consider the importance of raising awareness and improving education on HIV and AIDS.
This Frontiers in Reproductive Health Research Topic ‘Prepared for Life – HIV Prevention, Education, and Action’, is one in a series of two Research Topics which aim to improve education and increase awareness of HIV and AIDS, and provide a platform to support those living with the virus.
Topics may include, but are by no means limited to:
- Current educational approaches to HIV and reproductive health in schools and communities
- Discussions of lessons learned from the experience of addressing HIV and AIDS
- Lessons still to be learned and challenges still to be addressed
- Approaches to researching stigmatized and controversial areas of human experience
