Hepatitis B virus is one of the leading causes of liver disease around the globe, specially so in the Asian Pacific region where in most parts, most of the cases of liver cirrhosis and liver cancer are caused by hepatitis B. There is wide economic disparity in this region as well as huge dissimilarity between countries of the region in terms of quality and level of health care, reimbursement and so on so forth. Sustainable development goal 3.3 calls for eradication of this viral menace from the globe by 2030, a daunting task, that has been made even more challenging given the COVID-19 pandemic. The broad spectrum of diseases of the liver caused by hepatitis B also poses challenge. In order to overcome such challenges more research and collaboration among Hepatologist and researchers of the region and beyond is extremely vital.
The problems faced by all concerned quarters in combating hepatitis B in the Asian Pacific region and globally is diverse and daunting. There is still huge gap in our knowledge regarding pathogenesis, immune response, post and viral factors influencing course of disease etc., not to mention that, unlike hepatitis C, we are lagging behind in our quest for a cure for hepatitis B. Therefore when it comes to hepatitis B, the spectrum of research is as wide and diversified as is the spectrum of liver diseases caused by the virus and our knowledge gap regarding this unseen menace.
