Poultry is a fast growing and vibrant sector of developing countries and plays an important role in ensuring food security. However, its progress is suppressed due to outbreaks of certain infectious diseases. Use of Synthetic drugs including antibiotics, anthelmintics, acaricides are the center of eradication and control efforts against different infectious and economically important diseases of poultry. However, long-term irrational use has generated drug resistance thereby reducing the ability to control infectious agents. Moreover, most of the drugs are highly toxic in nature. They negatively affect the non-target organisms and can be lethal for animals and even to humans. They induce various changes both behaviorally and histologically in the non-target organisms. In recent years, research on alternative control strategies have also been considered. Due of the above mentioned constraints related with synthetic drugs, scientists all over the world are in search of alternative compounds/agents to manage these infectious diseases. Among alternatives, novel compounds including use of antioxidant rich botanicals, essential oils and other strategies have gained attention because of their potential to have therapeutic properties and improving performance of poultry.
This Research Topic is designed to explore novel therapeutic agents against different infectious diseases of poultry. This will help in collection of novel therapeutic agents against economically important and infectious diseases at different regions of the world which will ultimately help in novel drug development and solutions to synthetic drug resistance.
Potential themes include, but are not limited to:
- Use of novel agents against infectious diseases of poultry
- Potential of different botanicals, essential oils for controlling diseases
- Drug development from alternative compounds
- Role of various compounds in improving performance of poultry
- Strategies to reduce synthetic drug resistance
