Dementia has become a public health crisis. Since there is no cure for common forms of dementia, successful prevention based on identified risk factors of cognitive aging is needed. Studies have found that dementia shares numerous risk factors with cardiovascular disease, and it is expected that improvement of cardiovascular health can prevent or delay the onset of dementia. We are seeking research papers examining how cardiovascular health is related to cognitive aging, and how the change in cardiovascular health may affect cognitive function and risk of dementia.
Although a number of risk factors related to cardiovascular disease, including hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and hyperlipidemia, have been found associated with an increased risk of incident dementia, prevention strategies based on these factors haven't been successful, as are indicated by the results from multiple randomized controlled trials. Therefore, efforts should be taken to identify successful strategies more broadly that may potentially prevent adverse cognitive outcomes, including those targeting to improve cardiovascular health.
This Research Topic aims to present the latest advances in the intersection of cardiovascular health and cognitive aging, in order to better understand the relationship between cardiovascular health and cognitive performance and to improve cognitive health through changes in cardiovascular risk factors. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
-Novel cardiovascular risk factors related to cognitive outcomes (e.g., cognitive decline, dementia)
-Primary prevention of cognitive decline and dementia through the improvement of cardiovascular health
-Potential impact of population health policy on prevention of cardiovascular disease and dementia
-Evaluation of lifestyle intervention on cognitive outcomes
-Application of novel epidemiological methods in issues related to cardiovascular health and cognitive aging
