Many diseases present in modern society cause permanent or almost permanent damage to the nervous system, and the reversal of the effects caused by tissue damage is often impossible. Diseases such as diabetes or hypertension are chronic degenerative diseases that significantly impact public health. In diabetes, the inefficient insulin activity in target tissues provides an imbalance in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. This disorder is also responsible for the decrease in the activity of antioxidant enzymes, thus culminating in oxidative stress-induced damage and damage to the central nervous system. In addition to neurodegenerative diseases, improper exposure to toxic products, such as mercury, also causes irreversible neuronal damage to humans. For these cases, there are reports in the literature that some natural products have been used as antioxidant agents that prevent injury to physiological systems through oxidative stress. Some of those natural products are açai, blackberries, raspberries, cherries, red lettuce, red plum, eggplant, guava, strawberries, and red cabbage, which are rich in anthocyanins, or red fruits and vegetables such as oranges, beets, and broccoli, that are rich in beta-carotene.
In this scenario, the prevention of damage caused by diseases in the nervous system is essential for patients with chronic diseases that involve tissue degeneration. Therefore, the use of natural products with recognized antioxidant action can be a good preventive approach. Thus, the goal of this Research Topic is to bring together studies that show the effectiveness of natural products in preventing damage caused by neurodegenerative diseases and toxic agents, in order to seek innovative solutions for the prevention of neuronal injuries.
The scope of the Research Topic will consist of articles on the use of natural products in the prevention and/or treatment of neuronal injuries caused by neurodegenerative diseases and neurotoxic agents.
