Brain stimulation is a fast-growing field of neurotechnology that offers modulative effects on central nervous systems by delivering physical energy into the brain. It has a wide range of applications for understanding the cognitive process of healthy brain and treating brain disorders. The brain stimulation technologies, via invasive or noninvasive approaches, provide a means to modulate brain activities by injecting electrical, magnetic, optical, acoustic energy or chemical substance. These technologies can effectively realize facilitation/transition of certain cognitive states or suppression of a certain diseased state by shifting the system back to a healthy state. The technologies can be used to excite or inhibit brain network dynamics in a controlled way, depending on the selection of stimulation parameters and applications. Such neuromodulation approaches offer spatially specific, direct ways to interact with the brain that fills in unaddressed needs left by pharmacological treatment plans.
In this Research Topic of Brain Stimulation in Cognition and Diseases, we would like to address the problem of how to identify optimal brain targets for stimulation and effective stimulation protocol/paradigm/parameters for improving human/animal cognitive processing, e.g., meditation, memory/attention/learning, and/or treating neurological diseases and mental disorders, e.g., chronic neuropathic pain/epilepsy/depression/schizophrenia/PTSD/ADHD etc. To pursue this goal, recent advances in the brain stimulation technologies and practices include the efforts to enhance the spatial specificity of stimulation for greater effectiveness, to minimize risks of biological tissue damage for the improvement of safety, and to develop multi-modal approach of robust neuromodulation effects with simultaneous feedback control for closed-loop dosing of brain stimulation.
