Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that emerges as an imbalanced immune response of the host to infections and leads to a systemic inflammatory response that impairs vital organ functions. Despite the amount of research and clinical trials, sepsis is still associated with poor prognosis and represents one of the leading causes of death in the world. A better understanding of the precise mechanisms that drive sepsis and of the immune pathways affected by sepsis are needed to allow timely diagnosis and personalized approaches.
In this Research Topic we aim at gathering articles dissecting immune pathways, highlighting crucial immune cell functions, and discussing new techniques to identify biomarkers and therapeutic targets for diagnosis, prognosis and personalized therapeutic opportunities of septic patients.
We particularly welcome submission of Original Research, Review, Methods, and Perspective articles on the following sub-topics:
• Immune biomarkers
• Omic-based studies for patient stratification based on immune biomarkers
• Molecular pathways impaired in sepsis
• Key actors involved: cell types and soluble mediators
• Therapeutic targets in sepsis
