Given the success of
Volume I of this Research Topic, we are pleased to announce the launch of Volume II: “The Alzheimer's Disease Challenge”.
The repeated failure of clinical trials on the amyloid-based medications and the pessimistic calculations of Alzheimer's disease cost burden for the next few decades present a severe challenge to humankind with severe social implications. In recent years, several alternative diagnostic and treatment procedures have been presented to treat and manage Alzheimer’s disease as it has been nearly impossible to suggest a holistic solution. Several revelations in human biology have highlighted the multiparametric character of the disease. Besides the amyloid aggregation and neurofibrillary tangles that result in Aß toxicity and tau phosphorylation, processes such as Gene Mutations, Proteins Misfolding, Brain Biochemical and Histopathological Changes, Behavioral Changes, Nutrition and Metabolism Alterations, and Autonomic Dysfunctions due to Central Nervous System dysregulations are common signs and probably early diagnostic biomarkers in most of the Alzheimer's classification categories.
While Alzheimer's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disease leading to memory loss and cognitive dysfunction, a multidisciplinary management approach could be more efficient, targeting various aspects and topics such as:
• The correlation between ROS production and enhanced mitochondrial fragmentation with Alzheimer's disease pathophysiology
• Balanced nutrition and the role of metabolism
• The study of behavioral alterations due to Dementia-related brain pathology
• Application of enhanced environmental stimulation for improving dendritic branching and synaptic density that could potentially result in neurogenesis
• Application of Brain-Computer Interfaces for Alzheimer's disease diagnosis and efficient symptom management
• Establishing procedures for the early diagnosis and prognosis of Alzheimer's disease lesions
• Non-pharmacological treatment of Alzheimer's disease
The purpose of this Research Topic “Alzheimer's Disease Challenge Volume II” is to regroup the entire spectrum of complementary approaches besides the traditional medication treatments and to present state-of-the-art original research articles, reviews, mini-reviews, case studies, methods, hypotheses/theories, opinions, letters, and commentaries.
