We are delighted to present the inaugural “Horizons in Communications and Networks” article collection. This collection showcases high-impact, authoritative and reader-friendly review articles covering important topics at the forefront of Communications and Networks with a focus on beyond 5G.
The standardization of fifth generation (5G) communications has been completed, and the 5G networks are being deployed worldwide. As a result, the visioning and planning of beyond 5G (B5G) and the sixth generation (6G) communications has begun, with an aim to provide communication services for the future demands of the 2030s. In this research topic, the invited papers, offered by world-class experts in wireless communications and networks, will provide a vision for B5G/6G that could serve a research guide in the post-5G era. To support this vision, these papers will discuss the potential application scenarios of B5G/6G. In addition, key potential features of B5G/6G and the required communication technologies will be discussed. Finally, issues beyond communication technologies that could hamper research and deployment of B5G/6G will be explored.
All contributing authors were nominated by the Chief Editors of the Journal in recognition of their prominence and influence in their respective fields. The cutting-edge work presented in this article collection highlights the diversity of research performed across the entire breadth of Communications and Networks.
