Obesity epidemic represents a major challenge to chronic disease prevention across the life course worldwide. Indeed, the presence of obesity impacts on the development and progression of many diseases, not limited to type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. It affects fertility, nutritional status, pregnancy and newborn outcomes, and early childhood health. In addition, stigma and discrimination toward subjects with obesity have several consequences for their psychological health.
Obesity epidemic is a complex problem which needs a deeper understanding to find potential solutions through a multifaceted approach. Nevertheless a key source of solutions resides in the intervention through nutritional approaches. Through this topic we hope to explore the variety of nutritional strategies employed in isolation, and in combination with pharmacological therapies as effective treatment for obesity.
Part of this will be to understand the influence of the gut microbiota how dietary change can have an impact. Also of interest will be the importance as of the psychological health of patients in outcomes and how intervention is associated. In addition, we aim to elucidate the association of nutrition and comorbidities just as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer.
This Research Topic welcomes contributions from basic molecular and cellular research through to clinical research, clinical care, research in best practice and management of obesity focusing on nutritional approaches.
We encourage scientists to submit original research, case studies and reviews on the following but not limited to topics:
• Novel nutritional strategies for the treatment of obesity
• Nutritional strategies in combination with pharmacological therapies
• Effect of nutrition on the gut microbiota and the impact on obesity outcomes
• Association between nutrition and nutritional therapies on obesity comorbidities
• Association between psychological health and outcomes from nutritional approaches
