COVID-19 is a highly infectious disease characterized by severe inflammation and catabolism which may result in multiple-organ complications. It can also influence deep changes in the body with respect to the amount, structure, and function of skeletal muscles and bones. These changes can progress to acute sarcopenia or fractures, respectively, especially among severe COVID-19 cases, the elderly, and patients on long-term intensive care. Furthermore, the global response to the pandemic has negatively impacted the routine care of most chronic diseases, which were either delayed or neglected, including musculoskeletal diseases.
The main goal of this Research Topic will be to explore the importance of COVID-19 as a risk factor for the most common diseases and musculoskeletal conditions, such as, but not limited to, sarcopenia, osteoporosis/fractures, and osteoarthritis as well as the impact of the pandemic in the management of musculoskeletal diseases.
In this Research Topic, we will compile the most novel and pertinent articles regarding the impact of COVID-19 on diseases in terms of clinical diagnosis, prognosis, and management, through original works and reviews of authoritative authors.
