In the past years, interest in educational robotics has increased, in particular due to the ongoing digitalization of modern societies and the new skills that an active citizenship requires. It has been argued that educational robotics activities have the potential to promote the acquisition of such skills such as computational thinking (CT) digital literacy in general as well as transversal competences such as critical thinking, creativity, communication or cooperation. Several attempts have been made worldwide to introduce robotics in school education as well as in after school courses and activities. Different questions around the implementation of educational robotics in school remain however open.
The aim of this Research Topic is to gather contributions on the affordances and challenges surrounding the implementation of educational robotics in school (K-12, higher education, vocational education) in order to prepare children for the 21st century. Possible questions that can be addressed are: how to evaluate educational robotics activities? How to reach also “not-pioneers” teachers? How to insert educational robotics into the national curricula? How to prepare and support teachers?
This Research Topic encourages the submission of different type of manuscripts: e.g. case studies, empirical studies, conceptual and descriptive contributions.
Relevant topics include (but are not limited to):
- Evaluation of educational robotics activities
- Training and support of teachers
- Integration of Educational robotics into national school curricula
