The COVID-19 pandemic has hit the higher education sector hard, in which universities are forced to accelerate the implementation of online learning. Although universities have e-learning ecosystems in place, yet, these environments are mostly designed for blended learning in mind, and not a full-blown remote learning implementation. This special issue discusses the state of e-learning in higher education and how universities coped with its demands. The special issue also touches on how we can move forward in the post-pandemic era, in implementation of pre-existing models of blended learning or moving into flexible and agile learning ecosystems in line with the fourth industrial revolution.
