Childhood trauma is a common and global phenomenon. Multiple reports have demonstrated a meaningful relationship between childhood trauma and detrimental health outcomes. As such, childhood trauma has repeatedly been linked to a higher risk for the development of mental health disorders, including, but not limited to, affective disorders, anxiety or fear-related disorders, as well as disorders specifically associated with stress (e.g., complex posttraumatic stress disorder). Childhood trauma has also
been connected to behavioral issues and poor psychosocial adjustment. Given the widespread prevalence and the detrimental health consequences in survivors, childhood trauma is a major public health concern.
In order to achieve an in-depth understanding of the mental health outcomes and potential behavioral issues linked to the experience of childhood trauma, more cutting-edge research is needed. This Research Topic is dedicated to research approaches that enhance understanding of the relationship between childhood trauma and a diverse set of mental health outcomes.
Our goal is to examine the multiple consequences of childhood trauma on mental health outcomes across the life-span. This Research Topic will highlight cutting-edge empirical studies that enhance understanding of the consequences of childhood trauma on mental health outcomes, behavioral issues, and psychosocial
adjustment. The shared implications of the study findings may a) provide an overview of recent advances in this particular research field; b) assist in elucidating potentially modifiable points of intervention to diminish mental health consequences; and c) enhance awareness of the multiple detrimental health consequences of childhood trauma.
Our intention is to highlight recent findings on a range of childhood traumas (e.g., abuse, neglect) in various trauma contexts. Furthermore, we aim to emphasize empirical results on the detrimental mental health outcomes, including psychological disorders (e.g., depression, anxiety), and behavioral and
psychosocial adjustment issues (e.g., aggression, substance-use). Lastly, we intend to discuss the potential for these findings to inform advances in psychosocial treatment and intervention for survivors of childhood trauma.
This Research Topic should not only advance understanding of the mental and behavioral health consequences of childhood trauma across the life-span, but also provide an up-to-date overview of the
latest findings on this global and common risk factor.
We welcome Original Research articles, Case Reports of clinical cohorts, and Review articles addressing the above-mentioned goals. In particular, we encourage submissions on the following topics:
- Association between childhood abuse, neglect, or maltreatment and mental health outcomes;
- Association between childhood trauma and violent behavior;
- Association between childhood sexual abuse, gender, and mental health outcomes;
- Association between childhood trauma and later-life mental health (i.e., older adulthood);
- Association between childhood trauma and (complex) posttraumatic stress disorder;
- Association between childhood trauma and risk of dementia;
- Association between childhood trauma and interpersonal issues (e.g., social integration, attachment, trust issues);
- Relationship between childhood trauma and addictive behaviors;
- Impact of childhood maltreatment in individuals with schizophrenia.
