With the population and economic growth over the decades, urban power grids are now facing much expansion and operational challenges. The power demand in large cities is increasing as the world urbanizes. On the other hand, for reducing the emission of greenhouse gas, the local fossil fuel power generation plants are replacing by town-style renewable generation or cleaner external sources. Moreover, the rapid integration of flexible loads such as electric vehicles further brings more uncertainty into the urban power system, which significantly raises the probability and high impacts of power outages. Therefore, the innovation of the technology and control strategy for urban power grid upgrading becomes essential.
The objective of this research topic is to promote theoretical and practical studies in the control and operation of the Next Generation Urban Power Grid so that improve operating flexibility and resilience, increase the friendly integration of renewable energies, and flexible loads.
