The term shift work generally relates to work performed outside of a typical Monday-to-Friday daytime schedule. Shift work arrangements are reported around the world, and are particularly common in sectors requiring continuous services or operations. Shift work can extend to 24 hour work days, including nighttime, by alternating workers and/or groups of workers.
Such work arrangements may disrupt daily personal rhythms of biology, physiology and behaviour, with potentially negative implications for worker safety and health. Further, “exposure” to shift work can be difficult to define since it encompasses various scheduling, work environment, social, and individual characteristics. This complexity challenges exposure assessment in epidemiological studies and the development of strong evidence to inform health interventions and policies.
The goal of this Research Topic is to attract high quality research papers that examine the assessment of shift work and its impacts on the health of workers. We will accept manuscripts including, but not limited to, the following:
• Associations between shift work and various health outcomes
• Prevalence and characteristics of shift work across occupations and regions
• Exposure assessment methods to characterize shift work in epidemiological studies
• Policies and interventions to support shift worker health or mitigate negative impacts
