Emotion regulation is a complex process that defines the ability to process, influence, and control our emotional state. A vast amount of literature studies the neurobiology and mechanisms behind emotion regulation. Little is known about how emotions interact with the cognitive process to self-aware individuals' emotional state.
Experimental research has shown that the lack of cognitive regulation of emotions can lead to maladaptive behaviors found in several pathological conditions. Interestingly, research has also shown that we can use cognition to improve individuals' emotional states.
This Research Topic aims to understand better the neural system that allows individuals to regulate their emotions by using their cognitive abilities – How does emotion interact with attention, learning, and memory? How does emotion interact with cognition in the context of social interactions? What are the critical neural circuitries involved in these processes?
We welcome original research articles, reviews, mini-reviews, brief research reports, and perspectives that will support the study of cognitive processes and social interactions' impacts on emotion regulation.
