With the rapid development of civil engineering constructions, innovative materials have attracted more attention and are introduced into civil engineering, considering their benefits in different properties. In recent years, fiber and composite materials, including but not limited to metal fibers, plastic fibers, nanofibers, biopolymer fibers, fiber-reinforced polymers (FRPs), and recycled products, were applied to improve the mechanical and durability performances of construction materials and structures. Exploring their effects on the various properties of materials and structures in civil engineering has also been widely conducted. During the exploration, not only experimental investigations but also simulations were operated in multiple aspects to evaluate, optimize, and predict the material and structural properties.
This Research Topic will focus on innovated and efficient application of fiber and composite materials in civil engineering. The main sub-topics include the effects on mechanical properties and durability performance by employing the materials mentioned above in concrete materials and structures, wood composite structures, the new application of FRP in composite structure (e.g., concrete-steel structure, concrete-wood structure, etc.), the application of composites or fibers in asphalt materials, and the utilization of recycled fiber and composite materials for sustainable civil materials or structures.
Therefore, this Research Topic will provide an opportunity for researchers in civil and materials engineering to publish their most recent innovative findings with the application of fiber and composite materials. The papers published in this Research Topic should propose novel techniques which effectively apply the materials above in civil engineering and scientifically demonstrate the behaviors of materials and structures after the applications. Potential topics include, but are not limited to the following:
• Utilization of fibers in concrete materials for performance enhancement
• Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) for structural strengthening and repairing
• The effects of fibers and composite materials in the performance of asphalt concrete materials
• The use of fibers and composite materials in wood & bamboo structures
• Durability performance improvement by fiber and composite materials
• Sustainable civil engineering materials with the addition of recycled fibers and composite materials
