Countries in Sub-Saharan Africa are faced with the threats of widespread food insecurity, poverty, and malnutrition with urban areas being the worst hit as a result of extensive poverty in expanding cities. Due to poor infrastructure, such as inadequate transportation, the accessibility of food to urban residents is uncertain and poor urban populations are at high risk. The growing challenge of these urban food-system stressors must be addressed to meet the needs of the expanding urban populations of countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. This challenge calls for new innovations and sustainably re-engineered urban food systems that will provide healthy, accessible food to people, whilst providing benefits to the environmental and socio-economic systems that surround food crop, livestock production, and consumption.
Developing sustainably managed food systems involving urban centers holds the prospect of helping us to achieve SDG-2, as well as solving food and nutrition security challenges, therefore calls for extensive research on the topic of urban food systems, food and nutrition security, urban agriculture, and sustainability.
Urban agriculture plays a highly important role in this topic. Here we use this term to refer to both urban and peri-urban agriculture (UPA), which are vital to rapidly evolving food systems now and in the future throughout Sub-Saharan Africa.
This collection “Feeding the Growing Cities of Sub-Saharan Africa: Challenges of Urban Food Systems, Food Security, Urban Agriculture, and Sustainability” welcomes high quality and original contributions on novel ideas on how to achieve urban food and nutrition security, and healthy diets in sustainable ways that benefit socio-economic and environmental capacities to generate food security and nutrition for future generations.
The Research Topic is focused on Sub-Saharan Africa and welcomes submissions on the following thematic areas and others that are closely related:
1. Urban Food Systems
2. Urban Food and Nutrition Security
3. Urban and Peri-Urban Agriculture
3. Urban Food Chains, Agro-Processing, Food Supply and Distribution Systems
6. Climate Adaptability in Urban and Peri-Urban Agriculture
