Neurodegenerative diseases (ND) are a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by progressive degeneration of the structure and function of the central nervous system (CNS) or peripheral nervous system. The most common neurodegenerative diseases include Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), corticobasal degeneration (CBD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), multiple system atrophy (MSA), and Huntington's disease (HD). With the increasing aging of the world population, ND has become one of the most serious diseases threatening the health of the elderly. Current therapy only alleviates symptoms without fundamentally affecting the major pathological features of the disease. These are disabling and fatal neurological disorders for which there is currently no effective treatment. Therefore, there is an urgent need to explore the mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases and to develop therapies that can slow the effects of aging and prevent these diseases. To date, there are only palliative therapies for these neurodegenerative diseases, and none of them are able to significantly slow or halt the underlying pathology. In pathological conditions, the potential of Tradition Chinese medicine (TCM) as a new treatment modality for central nervous system diseases has attracted much attention.
In TCM, molecules from natural products, natural products and herbal formulations have been used for clinical treatments for thousands of years. However, the mechanism of natural products in the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases remains unclear due to a lack of clear scientific evidence.
The aim of this Research Topic is to investigate the efficacy and safety of natural products in neurodegenerative diseases, as well as the pharmacological effects of natural products on the CNS system and possible mechanisms. We hope to collect Original Research and Reviews on basic, preclinical, clinical and translational research, including:
- Clinical evidence and possible mechanisms of natural products.
- Pharmacogenomic evaluation of plant-derived compounds
- Individual molecules from natural products, natural products and plant formulations that regulate the autophagy process and exert neuroprotective effects in NDs
- Individual molecules from natural products Natural products and herbal formulations regulating immunomodulatory and oxidative stress effects in NDs
- The experimental model for evaluating the effects of natural products and high-throughput screening of active compounds
Network pharmacology analysis of activated molecules from natural products mechanism
- Network Medicine for ND
