The coronavirus pandemic has posed tremendous pressure on public health systems across the world. Resources have been diverted to surveillance and treatment of COVID-19, leaving other aspects of public health and healthcare at a standstill. For instance, surveillance systems of other infections, such as tuberculosis and STIs, and non-communicable diseases have been understaffed due to the need of ready trained professionals to work on COVID-19 disease. The provision of healthcare, such as mental health services (which is already severely underfunded), also declined while the need for such services increased steadily given the impact of the pandemic on mental stress and anxiety. Across fields, healthcare systems had to quickly adapt to adhere to COVID-19 restrictions, for instance by leveraging digital forms of delivery. Finally, the pandemic has also laid bare significant inequities related to burden of disease, healthcare, and health outcomes.
This Research Topic will tackle the impact of the pandemic on public health systems and their consequent impact on health, organizational or policy changes that may have affected public health delivery. The COVID-19 pandemic has also driven healthcare innovation across the world, including novel interventions to deliver healthcare according to new sets of restrains and interventions aimed at promoting recovery and resilience to help mitigate medium- and long-term impacts of the pandemic. This Research Topic will also compile research documenting and testing innovations in healthcare driven by the pandemic. Sharing and critically appraising these innovations will not only increase our preparedness to deal with COVID-19 and its aftermath, but it will help with future health crises as well.
This Research Topic focuses on the impact of the pandemic on public health systems and healthcare, as well as innovations to drive recovery and resilience. We welcome papers that cover i) the mounting effects the pandemic has had on health systems and delivery of care across fields, ii) the various ways health systems have adjusted and adapted to the challenges posed by the pandemic, ii) public health interventions and innovations to overcome challenges and promote recovery and resilience, at the system- and individual level. Article types in this Research Topic may include, but are not limited, to Original Research, such as observational studies or intervention trials, protocols of trials, Community Case Studies, policy and practice reviews, and reviews on impact or interventions.
