Aging and diseases are shaped by complex interactions between individuals and the diverse physical and social environments (including the neighborhood environment, household air pollution, social supports) in which they are situated over their life course. Older people face increased risks from exposure to environmental agents and are more susceptible to environmental health threats. To reduce the burden of age-related diseases in the world with rapid population aging, it is vital to identify and avoid modifiable risk factors (i.e., environmental hazards exposure) for diseases such as cardiopulmonary diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, functional limitations, and cancers.
This Research Topic explores the evidence for environmental influences in older adult health and activity in daily living, identifies modifiable physical and societal environments for healthy aging, and offers recommendations for future research and policy interventions towards aging-friendly environments.
We welcome researchers and scientists with an interdisciplinary background to submit original research, case reports, opinion papers, and reviews relevant to this Research Topic (Aging-friendly Environments and Healthy Aging) on the following aspects:
• Epidemiology
• Environment Health
• Social Sciences
• Geriatrics
• Basic Medicine
With this Research Topic, we hope to promote greater insight into healthy aging.
