Certain environmental pollutants, including endocrine disrupting chemicals, have been linked to thyroid function disruption. Environmental exposures have also been reported to contribute to the worldwide increase in thyroid cancer incidence. Environmental exposure to pollutants are of increasing interest to researchers due to their ubiquitous presence in the environment, potentially long biological availability on the body, and insufficient knowledge of their impact on the thyroid gland.
In this Special Issue, we welcome Original Research and Review Articles focusing on, but not restricted to, the association between environmental exposures and thyroid health. Topics of interest to this issue are:
- Assessment of sources of exposure in a population-based setting;
- Exposure to environmental pollutants during a critical window (e.g. pregnancy, newborns, menarch) and the effects on the thyroid gland;
- The association between environmental exposures and thyroid cancer prognosis/ aggressiveness;
- Molecular or (epi)genetic mechanism assessments;
- Environmental exposure detection methods;
- Interactions or mixture effects of two or more environmental exposures.
