Whilst not life-threatening, they can significantly compromise quality of life, are associated with increased morbidity and pose heavy financial burden. Hence, periodontal and peri-implant diseases, dental caries, root canal infections and mucosal infections are significant global public health problems. The microbiome of the oral cavity is the most well characterised microbial community of the human host.
In order to understand how its composition and functions support the maintenance of health, or reversely, trigger disease, it is important to decipher the mechanisms underpinning their interactions of the microbiome with the host, in particular, oral mucosal immunity. Progress in the field is driven by multi-omic technologies, new computational tools and imaging technologies, as well as advances in cellular and molecular biology.
The 2nd International Conference on Oral Mucosal Immunity and Microbiome, held under the auspices of the Aegean Conferences, aims to highlight cutting-edge basic and translational oral immunological and microbiological research. This 4-day conference takes place during September 2021 on the Greek island of Kos, home of Hippocrates, the father of medicine. The forum is panelled by global experts who summarize and discuss the latest progress in oral mucosal immunity and the oral microbiome. Target audience is basic and translational researchers with expertise in host immunity and microbiome research, pertinent to oral health and disease. The goal of the conference is to provide bridge gaps at the oral mucosal immunity-microbiome cross-talk, and deliver a translational spin to basic research, that may in the future yield clinical applications.
