Radiation-based techniques, initially conceived for diagnostic imaging, have evolved over the decades to include very successful treatment protocols in oncology. Still, their potential is far from being fully exploited. Improvements in performance and efficiency of instrumentation, in the functionality of simulation tools, in the understanding of biophysical processes, and the development of new methods for the delivery of internal and external radiation could all contribute to the implementation of patient-tailored treatment protocols and ultimately to adaptive therapy.
Devices and methods resulting from research-driven innovation may have the potential to dramatically improve the effectiveness of internal and external radiation therapy. While some ideas succeed, many of them do not make it to clinical practice. How can the community increase the success rate? We propose to assemble the most recent, innovative and disruptive ideas as well as to identify the key for their transfer from demonstrators to in-vivo clinical trials.
In this collection we aim at strengthening the synergies between the different communities of radiation therapy, boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) and theranostics. All these approaches follow a common process: treatment planning, delivery and verification. While some of these steps are intrinsically different in their implementation, others share features and tools.
Subjects of interest for this collection include, but are not limited to, studies about new protocol approaches in particle therapy related to beam delivery, ion sources, quality assurance, treatment planning and in-vivo verification; flash therapy in radiotherapy and particle therapy; innovative imaging, in terms of devices and quantification methods, and treatment planning for theranostics and BNCT monitoring; software, modelling, simulation tools and algorithms related to all the above-mentioned topics.
Contributions from the clinical community about future improvements and/or new prospects are also welcome.
Manuscripts should either discuss new research results or suggest new promising approaches to any of the above-listed topics, in the form of original research, brief research report, review, mini review, perspective, technology and code.
