Despite recent advances in cancer screening and management, limited response rates and adverse therapy-related effects have been observed in a significant proportion of cancer patients. Therefore, potential improvements in understanding current treatment approaches and innovative clinical trials are needful to improve the therapeutic efficacy and timely evaluation of patient’s response.
Mitochondria and mitochondrial homeostasis have been shown to play a critical role in the pathology of various medical conditions. Mitochondrial genes and mitochondrial epigenetics have immense potential for developing early cancer detection or cancer prognosis markers. Mitochondrial response and dynamics are the major driving factors of cell differentiation and have important therapeutic potential for various disease conditions. Mitophagy the selective elimination of damaged mitochondria, and thereby toxic reactive oxygen species from the cells generally results in the survival of cancer cells and results in residual diseases. Understanding mitochondrial plasticity will pave the way to improve the quality of cancer therapy responses and decrease therapy-assisted adverse effects.
