Prostate cancer remains to be a leading cause of global mortality, known as the most common malignancy in men worldwide. There were approximately over 190,000 new cases in the United States and over 30,000 estimated deaths in 2020. The mortality and prognosis for prostate cancer patients remain poor and further research into understanding the mechanisms in cancer development is required. There have been significant developments in the treatment of prostate cancer including a variety of surgical treatments, hormone therapy, and radiotherapy. These methods of treatment have improved the survival rate; however, the death incidents remain high.
There has been a greater focus on local therapies including radical prostatectomy and radiotherapy as several studies have reported an increased survival outcome compared to non-local therapy, especially in elderly prostate cancer patients. As more recent therapies, there is a great interest in how radical prostatectomy and radiotherapy influences the survival of prostate cancer patients. Studies have been completed to compare the survival outcome of external beam radiotherapy (EBRT), brachytherapy (BT), and EBRT + BT (EBBT) in localised prostate cancer patients aged 70 years and beyond to see the influences of various localised therapies can have specifically on elderly patients and whether it influences the survival rate. There is also a particular interest in whether patients with cardiovascular diseases treated with radiotherapy or radical prostatectomy have an impact on the survival rate and whether there are any potential cardiotoxic effects and the impact from prostate cancer treatment.
This Research Topic aims to provide insight into how radical prostatectomy influences the survival rate of prostate cancer patients. Topics of interest include:
-Recurrence of prostate cancer after prostatectomy
-Comparison between radical prostatectomy and radiotherapy
-Influences on the survival rate of elderly prostate cancer patients
-Factors that may influence radical prostatectomy
-Cardiovascular diseases associated with prostate cancer treatment and therapies
