The quantitative assessment of adipose tissue in bone and muscle is of increasing interest in musculoskeletal research and routine in relation to osteoporosis, sarcopenia, fractures, over-/under-nutrition states, as well as frailty. However, imaging approaches to assess myosteatosis and bone marrow adipose tissue (BMAT) are still challenging, i.e., different fat depots (intermuscular, intramuscular, and intramyocellular fat) may represent different risk factors to metabolic health and muscle function but the segmentations of muscle and adipose tissue vary significantly, and MRI (the reference imaging tool for BMAT) faces challenges in the accuracy and precision of BMAT quantification. In addition, the studies of BMAT fatty acid composition in vivo are growing interests but limited by the estimation accuracy of advanced imaging methods like Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy or chemical shift encoding-based water-fat imaging (WFI) techniques. Furthermore, identifying the e?ects of adipose tissue on bone and muscle would give new insights into the pathophysiology of sarcopenia, osteoporosis and frailty and also improve our understanding of intervention.
This Research Topic aims to provide recent and novel insight into the methods of advanced imaging of adipose tissue in bone and muscle, and the roles of such adipose tissue in osteoporosis, sarcopenia and frailty.
In this Research Topic, submission of original articles, reviews, method articles, hypotheses, perspectives, and opinion articles will be welcomed on any subject related to imaging the fat in bone and muscle and its interplay with osteoporosis, sarcopenia and frailty, including but not restricted to the following themes:
- advances in imaging segmentations of adipose tissue and muscle
- mechanistic insight into the role of adipose tissue on bone and muscle metabolism
- exercise intervention effects in muscle and bone
- associations of myosteatosis and muscle mass with falls and frailty
- adipose tissue and osteoporotic fractures
