About this Research Topic
Protein is the protagonist of the life symphony. Protein performs its functions by interacting with many other biological macromolecules including proteins, nucleic acids and carbohydrates. The abnormalities of these interactions often lead to abnormal functions, which play critical roles in the pathogenesis of many diseases, and is also the focus of the treatment of diseases and the development of drugs. Therefore, the interactions between proteins and biological macromolecules have always been the pivotal issue in the field of biomedical research. In the past two decades, the advances in technologies including biological mass spectrometry, next-generation DNA sequencing, and bioinformatics give birth to a new field of molecular biosciences; interactomics.
As one of the pivotal issues in biomedical research, many technologies have been invented to study the interactions between proteins and other biomacromolecules, for example, yeast two-hybrid and immunoprecipitation-mass spectrometry used for investigating the protein-protein interactions. In the last ten years, by the benefit of advances in next-generation DNA sequencing technology, the combination of NGS and affinity purification can be used to study the protein-nucleic acid interactions. These technologies have greatly promoted the advance of this filed. However, there are still many unsolved problems, such as the high false positives in the analysis of interactomic data and real-time monitoring of these interactions. Therefore, it is necessary to summarize the latest research on the field of the interaction between proteins and biomacromolecules, including experimental techniques, bioinformatic methods/software, the applications in the studies of physiological and pathological functions, thereby advance our understanding of protein-biomacromolecule interaction, the cornerstone of cell function regulation in biomedicine.
The aim of the current Research Topic is to cover promising, recent, and novel research in the field of the interactions between proteins and biomacromolecules. Areas to be covered in this Research Topic may include, but are not limited to:
• Advanced interactomic techniques focused on the interactions between proteins and biomacromolecules
• Bioinformatics tools for data analysis of protein-biomacromolecule interactions
• Application of the interactome based toolbox in the study of major diseases, especially cardiovascular diseases, metabolic diseases and tumors.
• Identification of the structural motifs for protein-biomacromolecule interactions
