Biomaterial has been well known as a substance that could be as part of a complex system or alone to directly repair, replace the damaged tissue and organs, or perform a therapeutic effect at the location of the lesion. Functional and smart biomaterials are kind of materials that carry biologically active substances (growth factors, extracellular matrix proteins, genes, and cells, etc.) or possess light, thermal, magnetic, and other stimuli-responsive components to achieve precise tissue regeneration and excellent wound healing. The development of functional and smart biomaterials has a close relationship with medicine, biology, physics, chemistry, and materials science, etc. Functional and smart biomaterials are playing important role in clinical application now, such as facilitating wound healing and restoring biology function. However, the performance of these biomaterials still needs to be further enhanced due to the complicated interactions with components of living systems and the unpredictable responses from the body of biomaterials. Thus, the good development of functional and smart biomaterials will be a guarantee for their future clinical application for improving patients' health and life.

The goal of this Research Topic is to publish research articles in full length, short communications, review articles, and opinions covering the latest studies, progress, and challenges on functional and smart biomaterials for regenerative medicine. This Research Topic aims to become the reference relevant to the design, preparation, characterization, and evaluation of functional and smart biomaterials for their future application in regenerative medicine.

The main scope of the Research Topic encompasses new concepts in functional and smart biomaterials design, preparation and evaluation, studies into the interaction of functional and smart biomaterials with the body, and the use of materials to answer fundamental biological questions in vitro and in vivo. We welcome submissions in the following themes, but not limited to:
(1) Design, preparation, and characterization of functional and smart biomaterials,
(2) Cell-Biomaterials interaction at the nanoscale and microscale,
(3) Functional and smart biomaterials as model systems for stem cell and human biology study,
(4) Functional and smart biomaterials for regenerative medicine,
(5) Surface modification and interactions at the biointerface biologically inspired and biomimetic materials,
(6) Design of smart carrier/scaffold/hydrogel materials,
(7) Topological nano/micro functional and smart biomaterials biomaterial,
(8) Biomimetic material,
(9) Nanomaterials and nanomedicine,
(10) Cells/signaling combining functional and smart biomaterials for guided tissue regeneration,
(11) Mechanism on cell-biomaterials interaction,
(12) Investigation methods/modeling for Functional and smart biomaterials development,
(13) New fabrication techniques and characterization of the Functional and smart biomaterials,
(14) Implanted nanodevices for the treatment of disease and tissue regeneration.
