COVID-19 has had a devastating impact on the tourism industry causing travel restrictions, social distancing, and the shutdown of tourism businesses around the world. The UNWTO estimates a loss of US $1.3 trillion in tourism revenues, as well as 100-200 million direct tourism jobs at risk. The tourism industry is predominantly comprised of independently owned, small and medium enterprises, founded and driven by entrepreneurs. These entrepreneurs operate in a dynamic, constantly changing environment and are faced with much adversity including low barriers to entry, increasing competition, as well as the impacts of COVID 19. While much research has analyzed the economic impacts of COVID 19 on the tourism industry, there remains significant gaps in our understanding of the impacts on entrepreneurs from a psychological lens.
The proposed Research Topic will bring together a collection of articles that focus on tourism entrepreneurs through psychological frameworks. The Research Topic will advance the body of knowledge on the entrepreneurial mindset and behaviors of tourism entrepreneurs. Papers can address broad issues around tourism entrepreneurs and psychology including:
- Resilience, grit and coping mechanisms
- Motivation and drive
- Mental health and wellbeing
- Entrepreneurial self-efficacy and locus of control
- Cognitive factors in tourism entrepreneurship
- Attitudes toward risk and uncertainty
- Place identity and place attachment
- Social identity and social capital
- Creativity and innovativeness
We prioritize cutting-edge empirical (qualitative and quantitative) research articles, but welcome Review and Mini-Review articles, Brief Research Reports, Case Studies and Conceptual Analysis.
