People with cardiometabolic conditions such as diabetes have a higher risk to develop long COVID or post COVID syndrome. Long COVID is defined as the persistence of symptoms beyond 3 months after infection due to the multi-organ damage caused by acute infection and occurs in about 10% of patients with COVID-19.

Up to now long COVID is not clearly defined, mainly due to its varying symptoms and pathophysiology. Emerging evidence suggest that long COVID is caused by the immune and inflammatory responses that occur in many severe acute viral infections. Especially the role of diabetes in these inflammatory processes has not been set forth so far. Investigations into interventions targeting multiple risk factors, including novel glucose-lowering agents that may improve metabolic function and potential processes that are impaired in COVID-19 are needed to identify suitable therapeutic options for management of people with long COVID.

We welcome original research and review papers contributing to novel information on the relationship between long Covid-19 and severe metabolic complications of preexisting diabetes including kidney disease as well as cardiovascular diseases.
