Organelles are critical regulators of cellular and organismal homeostasis. Although once thought to be relatively static compartments, advancements in live imaging have opened a new window into how organelles move and communicate with each other inside the cell. Organelles can rapidly remodel their molecular architecture and have distinct modes of inter-organelle communication that can shift in response to different metabolic cues. These recent discoveries have begun to reshape our current view of the cellular landscape and defining principles are beginning to emerge that are broadly conserved from single-celled organisms to mammals. Significantly, defects in organelle dynamics and communication have been linked to many human diseases, underscoring their importance to organismal health.
The goal of this research topic is to discuss and present the latest research trends that shed light on how dynamic organelle networks remodel and interact with each other in both healthy and disease contexts. Research articles related to mitochondria, ER, lysosomes, peroxisomes and membrane-less organelles are welcome. We also invite reviews, mini-reviews, perspectives and commentaries that fit within the scope of this research topic.
Specific themes include, but are not limited to:
- Inter-organelle contacts and communication
- Organelle dynamics and remodeling
- Organelles as signaling hubs
- Membrane-less organelles
- Organelle biogenesis and turnover
