Binge drinking is very common in adolescence, a crucial period for brain growth and maturation. Early-life alcohol exposure produces molecular, genetic, epigenetic and structural changes in the brain. Some of these changes are long-lasting and appear to be involved in adult psychopathology including psychiatric disorders and alcohol use disorder (AUD).
Tremendous progress has been made in basic and clinical research that has identified mechanisms that may be driving the behavioral phenotypes of adolescent alcohol use in adulthood. This special issue will highlight several important discoveries and include publications of research or review articles to provide a better understanding of adult pathophysiology after adolescent alcohol exposure.
