Advances in the fields of human neuroscience and health psychology have reaffirmed that there is a dynamic reciprocal relationship between the brain and the body and that the health of one system directly influences the health of the other. This observation has prompted the emergence of the field of health neuroscience, which leverages the conceptual frameworks and methodologies of multiple disciplines (e.g., health psychology, cognitive neuroscience) to better understand how the brain affects and is affected by physical health broadly defined.
The aim of this Research Topic is to bring together scholars from complementary fields such as health psychology, cognitive psychology, public health, and neuroscience to build a collection of articles centered on the multifaceted role of the brain in health and disease across the lifespan. We are particularly interested in research focusing on the brain as a predictor or a mediator of health and disease outcomes.
The scope of this article collection is intentionally broad given the central role of the brain in both health and disease. Empirical papers, reviews, and meta-analyses are welcome in this issue. Other manuscript types that will be considered include methodological papers, position papers, brief reports, and commentaries. Sample topics that are appropriate include (but are certainly not limited to):
- The brain as a predictor of health or disease outcomes
- The effects of health behaviors on brain health outcomes
- Mechanisms linking the brain to health and disease outcomes
