About this Research Topic
Changes of objectively observed fractal characteristics are markers of age-related alterations, including in normal and pathological aging. A change in the fractal dimension of the structure and dynamic patterns of activity of the brain and retina occurs in diseases of various etiologies, neurodegenerative disorders, brain tumors, cerebrovascular diseases, visual system’s diseases, cognitive impairment during stress, chronic anxiety or depression, and even during changing states of consciousness, such as sleep, wakefulness, and meditation. Moreover, the patterns of physiological and psychological responses to fractal stimulation therapy open the way for the formation of new therapeutic strategies.
This Research Topic will focus on applications of the achievements of fractal physiology in the diagnosis of pathologies of the brain and retina and new therapeutic strategies. It will present various approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, including interdisciplinary research in related fields. An objective assessment of the fractal complexity of the structural and functional organization can provide the clinic with differential diagnostic and prognostic criteria for the development of diseases of the brain and retina and criteria for the effectiveness of the therapeutic interventions.
The versatile view at the problem field will make it possible to highlight promising areas of research, analyze the accumulated empirical data and existing theoretical models. It can be assumed that fractal mono- and multimodal effects on the brain affect physiological processes in health and disease, modify the course of the disease, and provide adequate and effective therapy. Taking this into account, we are planning to present original research, reviews, and theoretical reflections on the potential of dynamic fractal stimulation technologies for the treatment of diseases of the brain and retina, psychotherapy, behavior correction, and stress reduction.
The aim of this Research Topic is to publish qualitative papers, referring but not limited to the works describing methods of fractal diagnostics of pathological changes in the brain and associated cognitive impairments, methods of studying fractal characteristics of the retina as markers of preclinical diagnostics of diseases, early precursors of neurodegenerative brain pathology, as well as new treatment and neurorehabilitation regimens, such as disease-modifying fractal influences upon the brain.
The Research Topic will publish rigorously peer-reviewed original research, reviews, and theoretical opuses, within the framework of the Research Topic.
This Topic will contain the latest advances in pointed areas of research. It will be necessary for specialists working in fractal physiology, neurology, neurosurgery and/or neurorehabilitation, psychology and ophthalmology, and researchers working in neuroscience-related fields.
Please note that all of the submitted papers must be within the general scope of the Frontiers in Physiology (Section of Fractal Physiology) journal.
