While fermentation and bioreactor-based biotechnology are critical to produce components for many high value-added products, the growth potential is still immense. New fields are unfolding where bioreactor-based products find a rapid market, fill gaps in the current economy, or help establish new industries. Plant cells and tissues have large diversity and serve many purposes, including native and recombinant protein production, metabolite production, and massive plant propagation. However, there are a number of challenges where research may help overcome current bottlenecks.
This Research Topic welcomes Original Research, Reviews, Methodologies, Opinions and Perspectives around:
• Design and improvement of bioreactors for plant-based production processes
• Molecular pharming, improvement of protein and metabolite production for the pharma and food industries, veterinary and plant health
• Plant cell cultures: stability, preservation and types of cells
• Methods to obtain products via transient or stable transformation
• Plant morphogenesis in bioreactors. Somatic embryogenesis and shoot proliferation scaling-up for cost-effective plant propagation systems.
• Economic feasibility and studies of bioreactor-based plant biotechnology
