Combustion is a key way to obtain power and energy for human societal activity, such as heat supply, power generation, engine-driven vehicles, aircraft and rockets, etc. However, with the usage of fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas, the resulting CO2 emissions are closely related to global climate change. Alternative fuels with carbon-free or carbon-neutral fuels from renewable sources, such as H2, NH3, methanol and biofuels, are drawing increasing attention in the current world. The combustion behaviors of these new alternative fuels are quite different from typical fossil fuels, especially in their reactivity, flame instability, amount of pollutant emissions, etc. Many challenges for alternative fuels can be solved with advanced combustion technologies. Advanced combustion technologies including mild combustion, chemical looping combustion, oxy-fuel combustion, and catalytic combustion for new alternative fuels are promising methods. Diagnostic technologies including flow velocity, species and temperature measurement, are advanced tools for combustion measurement, which help to obtain fundamental understanding of flames for those advanced combustion technologies.
This Research Topic aims to report the most important and latest technological advances in combustion technologies for new fuels (such as H2, NH3, methanol and biofuels) and serves as a platform for experimental and theoretical analysis of advanced combustion technologies for low carbon emissions.
