We are now entering the third decade of the 21st Century, and, especially in the last years, the achievements made by scientists have been exceptional, leading to major advancements in the fast-growing field of Network Physiology. Frontiers has organized a series of Research Topics to highlight the latest advancements in science in order to be at the forefront of science in different fields of research. This editorial initiative of particular relevance, led by Dr Plamen Ch. Ivanov, Specialty Chief Editor of the Systems Interactions and Organ Networks section, is focused on new insights, novel developments, current challenges, latest discoveries, recent advances and future perspectives in the field. Also, high-quality research manuscripts on novel concepts, problems and approaches are welcomed.
The Research Topic solicits brief, forward-looking contributions from the editorial board members that describe the state of the art, outlining, recent developments and major accomplishments that have been achieved and that need to occur to move the field forward. Authors are encouraged to identify the greatest challenges in the sub-disciplines, and how to address those challenges.
The goal of this special edition Research Topic is to shed light on the progress made in the past decade in the Systems Interaction and Organ Networks field and on its future challenges to provide a thorough overview of the status of the art. This article collection will inspire, inform and provide direction and guidance to researchers in the field.

Each Research Topic must be approved by the specialty chief editor, and it falls under the editorial oversight of our editorial boards, supported by our in-house research integrity team. The same standards and rigorous peer review processes apply to articles published as part of a Research Topic as for any other article we publish.
In 2023, 80% of the Research Topics we published were edited or co-edited by our editorial board members, who are already familiar with their journal's scope, ethos, and publishing model.
